A north east graduate has helped ‘find’ what was once considered ‘lost’ forever.
Doctor Who is one of those TV shows that has been around seemingly for ever. Even if you aren’t a fan, you’ll more than likely have at least head about the Tardis or the Daleks.
For half a decade though, 97 episodes of the hit BBC show were lost by the broadcaster, with only stills and sound recorded by a fan surviving. This week though saw the news that University of Sunderland graduate Rob Ritchie has worked a minor miracle and resurrected what many fans of the Doctor consider one of the most important episodes of those that were lost.
‘Power of the Daleks’ was first show in in 1966 and saw the debut of the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, who would go on to feature in a further 118 editions of the show.
Now, thanks to Sunderland-born Ritchie, an animated version of the episode has been made, after BBC producers noticed his work on YouTube, and is set for screenings on both sides of the Atlantic as well as in Australia.
Although at first Ritchie was brought in to make a trailer, he was quickly offered the position of lead animator and lead compositor.
It’s the latest in a line of noticeable achievements for graduates of Wearside and Tyneside’s three universities – Sunderland, Newcastle and Northumbria – a list which includes advances in science, engineering, sport and the media.
The north east’s universities are really at the forefront of a lot of the region – and nations – industries, and continue to attract students from around the world.
