Fears over Brexit lifted slightly for car giant
With change, nerves are inevitable – and there has been no bigger change than the upcoming, earth shattering decision of the UK to leave the EU which was surprisingly voted for back in June.

Workers at Sunderland’s Nissan plant were left with more than a few nerves after the Japanese car maker’s chief executive Carlos Ghosn warned that investment in the Washington based plant would be affected unless the company received relief from the Government in the wake of the Brexit.
Skip forward five months to October and to the welcome news that around 7,000 jobs at the plant – the biggest in Britain – are to be safeguarded, with the announcement that the marque’s next-generation of Qashqai and X-Trail are to be built at the former RAF Usworth site.
As members of the North East Automotive Alliance, we couldn’t be happier with the announcement which isn’t just big news for Nissan and the staff at Washington, but the north east and its proud manufacturing history.
Nissan is among the biggest employers in the north east and since opening in 1986 has seen over 9 million vehicles roll off the assembly line into showrooms and family homes around the world.
The news also shows that despite the Brexit the north east remains a key place to do business – not just for small and independent firms – but for multi-billion dollar, international corporations like Nissan.
