Sporting magic on its way to Newcastle

When you think of sport in the north east of England, football immediately springs to mind. Newcastle United’s promotion push ended in dramatic fashion with a last gasp Aston Villa equaliser against United’s rivals Brighton this week – enough to gift the Toon the Championship title and a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

It means that the north east has three teams in the top two divisions of the English professional game. It’s understandably hard to see past the region’s footballing heritage. But this May sees the return of a sport of a different kind.

The weekend of May 20-21 will see the return of the Super League’s Dacia Magic weekend to Newcastle, with the cream of the nation’s rugby league sides taking to the city’s St James’ Park for two days of top class rugby league.

It’ll be the third year in a row Newcastle’s historic stadium has held the mid-season celebration after taking over from Manchester’s Etihad Stadium in 2015 with supporters from all across the nation expected to flock to the city to soak in the unique atmosphere of the city.  Last year’s event attracted a total of almost 70,000 fans – and 2017’s edition is gearing up to blitz that number with tickets selling like hotcakes.
