Germany, France and the USA are integral to the north east’s arts and heritage industry a report has revealed.
The survey from the North East Cultural Partnership, says that regional cultural organisations “trade with one third of the planet”, with the biggest influence coming from Britain’s continental neighbours.
The north east’s creative and cultural industry is worth in the region of £700m and employs around 70,000 people. And while the report highlights that arts and cultural organisations are not traditional exporters, the skills, expertise and heritage that exist is enough to grab the attention of the rest of the world.
It should come as no surprise that Germany and France are among the biggest partners for the UK, considering their closeness to the country in distance. The north east’s airport and sea ports link make it a very attractive proposition to any European importers so again it’s no surprise that our Germanic and Gallic cousins form such an important part of our cultural industry.
It’s why Germany and France make up two of the top three visitor groups to the north east according to figures from UK Trade and Investment released earlier this year – with 13% and 11% of the areas visitors respectively.
